FROM THE EDITOR
I
hope you are doing well with your work with stock photos
in this new year despite threatening clouds of recession and
international conflicts. In fact the more threats you face
for your work the more benefits you should get with an
intelligent use of free or cheap marketing mechanism.
The
online marketing potential is increasing but the
competition becomes more and more tuff as individuals and
smaller companies become more professional in their approach,
harvesting the low-hanging fruits and applying more sophisticated
strategies and marketing tools.
I
this issue of Stock Photo News I have packed useful
information to improve your marketing related to pictures.
In earlier issues of SPN I have focused on the need for good
and relevant text on your web pages - a picture is worth a
1000 words - but unfortunately search engines can't read
pictures.
In
the following you will get straightforward tips to build
links to your site from other sites. All websites - big and
small - will benefit with more and more targeted traffic to
the website.
To
help you really benefit from the fast moving changes on
the web I have provided a number of resources for your
marketing work free of charge for you. They should be of great
help to make your efforts much more efficient and successful.
But that will only happen if you take action immediately.
Feel
free to forward this newsletter to friends and colleagues
to help them build a successful web presence.
Enjoy
reading Stock Photo News!

WHY LINKS TO YOUR SITE AND PICTURES ARE IMPORTANT
Some
basics (skip it if your are experienced in link
building and read further down).
The
main feature of the web is that information can be
linked. Linking means internal links in a website and
external links between different websites.
A
new website will typical start without any links from
other websites. But through the word of mouth it gets the
first visitors and if they find the information useful
they will tend to bookmark the site and the create links
from the websites they are in charge of.
This
mechanism of 'organic link building' is a very sound
feature of the web community and the search engines make
use of it when they estimate the value and content of each
website. The result of this is that a website with many
links pointing to it is regarded by Google as a more useful
information resource than competing websites.
Now,
the usefulness of information has to be related to what
kind of information people are searching for. Here comes the
focus on the content of the linking site and the content of
the site that get the links. The most precise way for a
search engine to estimate what kind of information users
will find when they click on the link is to focus on the
content of the linking text.
Obviously
a linking text saying 'find stock photos from
A-Z Fotos' gives more information for Google than the common
format: 'CLICK Here'. When pictures or graphics are used as
the link medium they have similar limitations. Always remember
to use a relevant link text.
Organic
link building is fine but it is a very slow process
in most cases.
Accordingly
most companies have a great interest in speeding
up the link building process by applying an active link
building strategy.
Before
Google and other search engines became as sophisticated
as they are now it was possible to help a website get notices
by participating in some kind of link exchange on a big scale,
so-called link farms, with free or with paid subscription.
Stay far away from these temptations nowadays. Your site
will easily be banned by Google and it will be very difficult
to get into the index in the future.
Reciprocal
linking has been useful all the life of the web
and it is still useful: You find another site you would like
to get a link from and offer in exchange a link from your
site.
It is time consuming, but it works. Select your link partners
with care and ask for the kind of text you want in the link
text.
The best will be sites with content matching your site's content
(not the same content but supplementary content) and with
a
high Google page rank, e.g. from 3 to 10.
If
you have the resources an Adwords campaign can help get your
site noticed and speed up the organic linking mechanism, check
for an Adwords campaign here:
http://www.stockphotonews.com/good/adwords
.
The
value of links from directories has diminished due to the
immense improvement of Google's ability to rank relevant webpages
in the top search results. Anyway especially links from specialized
and relevant directories should still be worthy to go for.
But
the following are the smartest and most potential link building
actions and they will all be dealt with in detail in the next
sections.
They are:
-
Commenting on blogs
-
Distributing articles for free reprint (article marketing)
-
Making use of social networks
........................................................
LINK BUILDING BY COMMENTING IN BLOGS
Blogs
are written by individuals and normally a blog includes
an option to make a comment. The web is flooded by millions
of
blogs and many of them are not of any value except for the
blog
writer and friends or family.
But
other blogs are highly valued among people in the same
industry or area of interest and such blogs can have many
readers
among the specific target group, often depending on how well-known
the person or the represented company is.
When
you write a comment in a blog you need to be very careful
to contribute with valuable and relevant information.
Many
blogs give the option to have a link to your website and
that is how your efforts with commenting in blogs can function
as part of your link building strategy.
With
helpful comments you will also strengthen the branding of
yourself as one with specialist knowledge in the field.
The
best value of the link from a blog comment is when the link
is direct, not through a link of the website, and if you have
relevant key word text in the link.
When
you start to comment you will normally have to fill in
Your name
Your email address (and this will not be visible)
Your web address - an option, - remember always to include
http://
In
my case I can write as my name 'Soren Breiting', but in most
blogs it will also be acceptable to write the name of my website
in stead of my personal name, and that is important because
'Your name' is the link text to the url link you have provided.
Your
comment will not be accepted if you use the text of the
comment to advertise some product or service - stick to your
helpful information and avoid links to your own site in the
comment.
The
link value of such a blog comment depends also on a
technicality aimed at search engines. To avoid blog comments
being spammed by marketers many blogs use a so-called 'no-follow'
tag that tells the search engine not to follow the links,
e.g.
not to follow links to your website.
It
easily becomes a big task for you to search for the relevant
kind of blogs and to find out which blogs are worth commenting
on.
I
have got my hands on a very nice and useful script that will
help you to find the relevant blogs for comments and make
the
whole process much easier for your link building strategy.
It
is now in its second version and it has helped me a lot in
short
time. You can filter away blogs with the no-follow tag to
avoid
them.
It
is free for you to download and no strings are attached to
it.
You
get the Real Link Finder here:
http://www.stockphotonews.com/good/rlf
........................................................
FINDING THE BEST AND MOST PROFITABLE KEYWORDS
The
content and service of a website can be described with many
different words. The ideal for the website owner is to describe
it with relevant keywords that are used by many of the relevant
people in the target group but with low competition from competing
websites.
In
the earlier days of the web it would be quite easy to experiment
with alternatives because you could simple set up different
parallel
webpages targeting alternative formulations of the keywords.
These
days, however, the search engines actual high ranking is based
on
much more sophisticated algorithms making use of the links
and the
link texts as mentioned.
I
have used different of the available tools, paid as well as
free
tools, for keywords, and most have their limitation, e.g.
some
demand a very expensive monthly subscription. I end up every
time
with the build-in tools in Site Build it.
You
can start with a kind of brainstorm where you generate all
the
most useful keyword combinations of your master-keyword in
a so-called
vertical search. Let us say you are producing a magazine of
cars.
Then you can search for cars and get the most searched combinations
of cars with other words. Cars in itself is all too broad.
Car
magazines might be much better but still too broad. And again
the
more you can narrow the keyphrases down to being more specific,
the better.
The
real value of this brainstormer tool and keyword listing tool
is the additional information that are generated automatically.
You get figures for how often the search term is used, how
many
competitors you will have to rank high for that search term,
how
difficult it will be to beat the competition and how profitable
the keyword / keyphrase seems to be. It is an amazing amount
of
data that are analyzed for us with just a few key strokes.
At
the moment I just have one subscription to this but I use
it
to find the best keywords to all my sites. You will get access
to the facility by signing up to get a SBI website here:
http://www.stockphotonews.com/good/sbi
The
Brainstorm It is now in version 2.2 and it is continuously
being improved as it is one of the most important reasons
for
the huge success SBI website owners have had, almost always
beating their competition as it is explained at
http://www.stockphotonews.com/good/sbi
.
........................................................
ARTICLE MARKETING AS LINK BUILDING
To
write useful articles about topics related to your
website is a proven strategy to get visitors to a website.
You write small focused articles and submit them to article
directories. Other webmasters and ezine publishers are then
allowed to reprint your articles as long as they keep the
whole article complete including the links and your name
and other information.
The
improved traffic happens through direct traffic when
the reader is reading the article and finds the author
clever with high quality information and it happens indirectly
when the link to the website helps to boost the rating of
the website in the search engines.
There
is a lot to say about article marketing and you can
find some more info in articles, just check the menu at
free-articles.net
http://www.ezinearticles.com
is the largest article directory
in the world. Sign up as an author and be very careful to
follow all the instructions for the article. It will take
you some time to get your first article accepted here.
There are lots of article directories but some of them are
dormant and some have very little traffic.
You
are welcome to submit English language articles to my
own article directory gratisartikler.com
as I
accept articles in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and English.
Normally you will have your article accepted in 24 hours
and that will give you a direct link to your website from
a page rank 3 website with good traffic. Sign up as an author

MAKING USE OF SOCIAL NETWORKS - SOCIAL BOOKMARKING
Through
the years we have been used to bookmark interesting
websites in our browser in our own computer. Now we have the
option to make our bookmarks available online for us, too.
That is useful.
But
the really smart thing is that such bookmarks can now be
public and useful for others. As such they can also be a part
of our link building strategy and traffic generating strategy.
The
impressive thing is that the social networking sites that
provide the facilities of social bookmarking have an impressive
amount of traffic.
The
traffic at Facebook is approaching the amount of traffic
at Google. And that had happened in a very short time. The
web
is certainly a rapid moving phenomena and the social networking
sites are expected to partly take over the traffic from the
big
search engines like Google.
There
is a lot to say about social book marking. For your
introduction just think of the following steps:
You
sign up as a user of a specific social bookmarking site.
You
go to a website (could be your own) and make an online
bookmark to your site.
You
use relevant 'tags' to tag your actual webpage as part of
the bookmarking process. The tags will become the linking
keywords
to your website and concrete webpage so to choose them well
is
important.
As
there exists a lot of social bookmarking sites some marketers
have created a kind of facilities for website owners as well
as
for the bookmarking process, see
video-directory.net
and try the facilities - they are all free.
If
you want more in depth information about social bookmarking
as part of Web 2.0 you are welcome to download this ebook

ZYMMETRICAL, THE FIRST AND ONLY FAIR TRADE DIGITAL ART MARKETPLACE
LAUNCHES ITS REVOLUTIONARY "EXPANDED SEARCH" WITH
FREERANGE ™ TECHNOLOGY
Zymmetrical.com,
the only midstock digital art marketplace for
photos, videos, fonts and graphics with prices starting as
low
as $1.00, is proud to announce that it has just enhanced the
search process.
New
York, NY, February 16, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Digital Art site
Zymmetrical, the first user generated marketplace for photography,
video, fonts and graphics where members can price their offering,
today announced the launch of its new "expanded search",
reinventing the search for visuals. With hundreds of millions
of
images and graphics available in the stock photography world,
the
"expanded search" delivers the highly-focused results
that buyers
need.
After
extensively researching and analyzing user needs, the
Zymmetrical team has created new query tools that allow for
a more
natural approach to finding the perfect video, graphic, font
or
image; all at a budget-friendly price.
The
Freerange ™ option allows users to find images with
a designated
area of blank or clutter-free space to facilitate adding a
logo or
text.
When
combined with the Color Picker tool, which allows users to
select
the dominant color of a visual, the result is a highly accurate
result.
"Image buyers already know what they need when they perform
a search,"
says Keith Tuomi, CEO and founder of Zymmetrical, "our
new tools allow
them to get to the perfect result much faster."
Zymmetrical's
breakthrough approach to search blends a semantic search
with a purely intuitive experience. While the majority of
midstock and
microstock sites rely heavily on a basic keyword search, Zymmetrical
is
building a user-friendly site with intelligent search options.
The
many "expanded search" tools work in perfect combination
with each
other, acting as a virtual search assistant, quickly filtering
out the
unnecessary content explains Tuomi. "We have sprinkled
some human
intelligence in our search tools", he continues, "making
it more useful
and less complicated".
Zymmetrical
is also the first and only midstock site to offer a Free
Firefox plug-in that allows to search right from a tool bar.
With
traffic doubling every six months, Zymmetrical is quickly
becoming
a familiar destination for anyone in need of a video, font,
graphic or
photograph. Moreover, available in 8 different languages,
it is fast
becoming the preferred creative tool to a large international
community
of art buyers.

SINCE LAST SPN
Recently
I went to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates at
the Arabian Gulf. What a hectic location. At the same time
a
bold approach to development and a quite scaring use of
resources and human forces.
Building
mainly on the growing population of wealthy people
in many parts of the world when thinking of attracting target
groups, but also building the real work on people from places
in the world more associated with poverty and social injustice
than democracy and an even sharing of wealth and the prospects
for the future. A challenging approach to development and
future security when others in e.g. my small country are
targeting ideas of sustainable development and social justice.
A
very interesting location to visit and a place where you
should expect much to have changes even a few years from now.
I
am collecting video clips to document options for
tourists in Dubai, see touristindubai.net
See
you in next SPN.

Other
ISPs: If one of your Stock Photo News issue is being

Stock
Photo News is 'in principle' a monthly newsletter
edited by me, Soren Breiting. Due to many travels abroad
it is impossible for me to keep the schedule of the issues
strictly fitting to each month. My intention is to bring
quality information that isn't outdated a month or two
later.
